History at Southery Academy

History teaches a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. 

Intent

At Southery Academy, our History curriculum is designed to spark pupils’ curiosity about significant events and individuals from the past. By exploring a wide range of people and time periods, students will understand how history shapes their lives today. The curriculum is ambitious for all learners, with knowledge, skills, and concepts carefully sequenced from Year 1 to Year 6, ensuring progressive and age-appropriate learning that deepens year on year.

Implementation

Our history curriculum extends beyond the National Curriculum, providing pupils with exposure to a broad range of individuals and historical periods. We encourage children to critically evaluate information and develop empathy for people’s lives in the past.

We utilise a variety of teaching tools, such as photographs, artefacts, books, and posters, alongside our subscription to The Historical Society.

Throughout their time at Southery Academy, children also participate in educational visits, offering hands-on experiences that bring history to life. These range from learning about Anglo-Saxon building techniques in the village to exploring the lives of the Victorians at Gressenhall.

Our history curriculum nurtures children's curiosity about the past, equipping them to ask thoughtful questions, think critically, evaluate evidence, and develop informed perspectives and judgements. It fosters an understanding of the complexities of people's lives, the process of change, societal diversity, and relationships between different groups, helping them form a deeper sense of their own identity and the challenges of their time.

Impact

Our engaging History curriculum fosters a love of learning, encouraging students to become lifelong learners with a passion for discovery. Our pupils develop inquisitive minds, eager to ask questions and explore the lives of others.

By studying a wide range of individuals and societies from across world history, our students gain the skills to appreciate diversity and respect differences within society. Their ability to evaluate historical sources helps them become critical thinkers and informed consumers of information.

Wade Hanslip (Archie's dad) spoke to Swans about the history of farming! He even brought his tractor!

Our local officers popped into Southery Academy to talk to the children about the community and how our own community has changed through history. 

Lots of our children's dream job is to work in the technology world! Michael (Fin's step dad) popped in to tell us all about the history of Apple.
